Degrading Aquatic bio-reserves of India

Jan 6, 2014
India has one of the most resourceful bio-diversities of the world. The flora and the fauna of Indian forest and the aquatic biospheres have been playing a very vital role in maintaining the decorum of our biodiversity. The natural beauty of India is the real resource of India. The sub-tropical climate of the Indian sub-continent adds to the beauty of this bio-diversity. The ever-moderate weather of Indian sub-continent makes its people more pleased with their lives here. Not only for those who live on land, this climate is a very comfortable one even for the flora and fauna which lives under the Indian Ocean. The aquatic life of the Indian ocean and other Indian seas really adds as an amazing asset to the country's diversity of species.

But for the past few decades, there has been a tremendous decrease in the grade of these bio-reserves. Although various reasons have been stated by the scientists across the world like Global warming, Greenhouse effect, Acid rain, etc., a very large contributor to the degradation of these bio-diversity is the Large-scale Industries and factories that spew out gases and effluents into the air and water near their area of operation.

Gulf of Mannar, one of the best biospheres of India has been losing its luster, in the past few decades. Subsidiary of a London based Company has been found to spewing out a lot of affluents into the waters near Tuticorin. According to the Rule 5 of Environment (Protection) 1986, the industry should not have been installed in a radius of 25 kms or less from the Bioreserve. But the company has been operating for more than 2 decades. The error is not with the person who started the company or who spew out the effluents, it is completely with the Government which did not even check the environmental regulations of the company.

Due to the regulating acts of Indian Government, we are replenishing our tiger resources in India.
The Government, which strictly regulates the deforestation acts, must also understand a very simple equation
                                                     Aquatic Life = Forest Life
So, the government of India must come forward to amend a bill that strictly regulates the site selection of such industries and other pollution causing organisations. That is the only way to bring the lost resources of Indian Bio-diversity back.

  1. Supreme Court wants a separate regulator for environmental clearances of projects since it is unsatisfied with the performance of Environmental ministry(Rumours: about 10 lakh crore of investment is pending for long due to inefficiency of environmental ministry to clear the papers). Thought this may not be related to the topic directly but a separate regulator can do the task more efficiently in a timely manner and it is likely to solve two problems(clearing projects and saving environment) at same time.
